Is it genetic? Im middle aged and always had a roundish tum and at the point my tummy looks reasonably small and trim, my legs are like twigs, i have no bottom and my face looks gaunt. To look normal in the above areas I need to be a certain weight and at that weight, no matter how many sit ups i do, there is a little fat tummy. It is so, so annoying, can you help please????


Emma, always difficult to say without seeing you in person. There is no doubt that as we move into middle age weight begins to accumulate around our tummy and waistline. Obviously, eating too much and failing to take enough exercise cause fat, but age-related hormonal changes are another major factor.
Often women who have never had a problem end up in middle age as a classic appleshape, with excess weight on their stomach.
We would suggest a close watch on your diet, make sure you are eating enough, but the right calories. Our tips would be:
Aerobic exercise is particularly important for reducing middle-age spread, however, there is also a growing body of experts who also believe strength training is important.
