Overcoming Fear

I started writing this article months back and found myself unsure what to write or how to start because I found this article got me thinking about my own personal fears. I know in our professional and personal lives we all face fears daily and the amplitude of those fears vary from person to person. So how do you recognise and then cope with your fears on a daily basis?

Over the past I have constantly given myself excuses as to why I wasn’t getting what and where I wanted. So here are a few tips on how to pin point truly what your fears are and how to deal with them.

Think Big And Ask Yourself ........

Where or what do you want to be or what do you want?

How close are you to getting this?

Now ask yourself the following question and take your time .....

What are the excuses you have given yourself as to why your not there?

Obviously you have some that ring alarm bells loud and clear in your head where others build up over time and some are just are just a small nagging feeling. I’ve recognised some of my fears are based on my professional life and others are based on my personal life. To complicate things slightly sometimes fears cross over into both areas.

This is just a few fears some of which are/were my personal own, so what is your fear?

  • You will not succeed
  • You are not good enough
  • You will not be able to do a task that is set
  • You will not be liked/accepted

Managing Fear

There are so many ways to deal with fear but avoiding it is definitely not a solution I would recommend. Try to keep in your mind 'If you want the same results then keep doing the same thing' so try something new!

Taking On The Challenge

Have you ever been asked to do something that is out of your comfort zone and through fear you have declined? Why not rise to the challenge, what truly is the worst that can happen? You may discover you have a hidden talent or find something new you really enjoy doing. The very first time I went up on stage was in front of 350 people I was petrified but I had agreed to the challenge and after 5 minutes of being up there I realised I loved being a part of that class and event. That whole experience lead to me teaching at further events and eased my fear so now I feel the traditional butterflies in my stomach every time I get booked or about to go up on stage.

Visualise

'If you see it in your mind, you’re going to hold it on your hand' - Bob Proctor

You need to believe and see yourself losing the weight or getting that promotion you need to visualise your journey right to the point of where you want to be and then see yourself doing what you want to do. Often we focus on the 'I need to' and the hurdles we have to face to get there but how often do we sit and think about what we will be doing, looking or feeling like once we get there?

Self Belief

Repeat after me ..... 'I can and I will!' Fear often comes from not believing in yourself and your abilities. You are the only person once you have set your mind to a goal that can actually see it through. 'Whether you think you can or think you cant either way you are right' - Henry ford 1863-1947. In new situations I often doubt myself and my abilities and to move forward and avoid burying my head in the sand I make sure

I have all the details so I am prepared

I am always myself

I am professional as I would expect another professional to be

I take the time to realise I am lucky but I have also earned the opportunity to be in this situation

I talk to my support system of friends and family

Support System And Your System To Support

Your support system can be friends, family or a partner remember even when you doubt yourself they truly know what you are capable of.

Your system for support can be how you as an individual deal with your fear whether its going for a run, meditating, reading or wearing your lucky socks!. Find a way to recognise your fear and then find a system that works best for you. I am very lucky I have an amazing support system and my system to support myself is a few deep breathes and a calm moment on my own so I can step forward feeling totally focused and ready to go!

Everyone of us has to overcome fears relative to life. It would be good to do an article listing the fears relative to the key ages of life. For instance, a child's fears are very different to a teenagers fears, a 30 yr old will have different fears to an 80 yr old. It may be reassuring to see them listed and to see how common or uncommon our fears are.

I think saying yes to stuff keeps us young and open to new things. It is amazing , one can know two people of the same age and yet they can seem so very different, one can seem old, stuck in their ways, dowdy, depressed and slow and the other seems sprightly, alert, funny and with it, interested in the world around them. I know Im only young but I know which one id rather aspire to be.

Hi Brian and Nicole, I thought this was a good article and I too watched the film "yes" recently, so snap!!! I think the art of getting the "yes" ratio right (so you don't always feel too challenged or on an uphill journey)is to always do what you think you may enjoy, that way you have the prospect of repeating it a number of times and perhaps learning something from it. It also has to fit with ones energy levels and general personality traits too. Lucy Case Fitness Director

Some great points, how often do I talk myself out of a situation? Watched that film "yes" and wondered do i dare say "yes" to more this year? It is hard to do as it means constantly feeling your on an uphill journey. Its good somedays and other days its not. Thanks tho x
