The only reason you have a High BMI is because the need to comfort yourself out weighs the need to be slim. In other words, whilst being slim seems like a great way to be, your need to comfort yourself is more dominant, and when you need to comfort yourself this urge is so strong that slimness seems like a fashion statement.
So to try and cajole yourself into being slim is like trying to get really emotive about a fashion statement and this just won't work. I may desire a pair of trendy flares on Monday, but by Friday when the cats died, I wont care about the flares.
If I position this to you slightly differently this feeling will shift. If I say your need to comfort yourself is in conflict with your need to be healthy, then you can see that the scales become more evenly weighted. However, regardless of the cat dying or the bath flooding, you do want to be healthy, then the real issue, the secret issue no one tells you about is this, you have to learn how to comfort yourself in a non destructive manner, one that supports your health.
If you don’t believe me re-read this article and substitute comfort with pleasure. Your comfort/pleasure may be food, fizzy drinks, chocolate, wine, but the truth is still there, you sought out comfort/pleasure from things you enjoy and now your body is out of health range.
This means that your comfort/pleasure is of a win-lose type of pleasure. We need to be aware of this. This is a bit like giving away a tenner and receiving a fiver. If we make one little change today why don’t we make it a win-win situation by doing this one simple thing? That simple thing is to acknowledge how much we need comfort and set about finding substitute ways of delivering this. That way you can actually enjoy comforting yourself and know that you are doing yourself no harm. In not doing ourselves harm, the win-win feels like a lot of fun and is a really liberating relief for a lot of people.
Before I tell you the change I want, I need to say this. The world is changing, and I believe we have to make a change too. I feel proud that when I go out I take my food with me. It may not be exciting, it may not be nutritionally perfect, but, it is achievable, satisfying and cheap and it keeps me healthy, strong and slim. My clients love my simplistic approach to food because unlike diets, once your food boxes are packed up you can actually forget about food and get on with your life.
In being freer to live and eat in a day to day manner, without much fuss, a natural balance occurs allowing the body to self regulate. I want you to start thinking about which statement you prefer. In taking my food out with me I achieve healthy BMI and am able to enjoy being in my body more, so I am proud of this commitment to my health. In being shy of taking my food with me I end up eating inappropriately and consuming too many calories, this way I gain body fat and have to carry a larger body around with me. What’s it to be? Carry the lager body around or carry around your own food?
So, I have your attention, right? Logically the food box is the least of your problems so why are you not using one. Because you think it will be a hassle. Check out the video for this article as it shows making a snack in the Lucy Way, which involves opening a bag, shoving the snack in and closing the bag. Your win-win really is that simple.
To get you started before anything else (a small bite sized chunk coming up), just start taking a snack with you when you go out and see how nice it feels not to have to worry about being peckish and then the tussle with what to eat, weather its good or bad etc, just whip out your snack and tuck in from the list below:
