Before we even touch upon the issues of changing this or changing that we need to get our head very much around the idea of belief. It astonishes me that people can talk quite happily about whether they believe in the afterlife or not, or whether they believe their dream last night was a premonition, yet when asked do they think they can achieve such and such a goal they shake their heads in a “no”. In other words something intangible in a different realm of existence is contemplated more seriously than something in this realm of possibility.
Once one accepts that this is not a consistent view point it must surely be useful to explore (if nothing else) the goal in this realm of existence once more. As we are in our High BMI Series, let's make that relevant to you. Ok, so the goal may be to lose 7 stone. Now there are many reactions to that, I imagine one may be, “my god I can never do that”.
Let’s talk about that because you may be right and I want us to test out the theory. If I wanted to climb a very large mountain and turned up at the bottom of the mountain in my gym kit with a bottle of water shouting “yeah let’s go” then it would be fair to say I didn’t know a thing about climbing mountains. If I said “look you don’t understand, I really want to get to the top of the mountain, really, really badly” someone may turn around and suggest I get the proper clothing, a rucksack, compass and read up about it, even attend a course.
Ok, next month I turn up at the bottom of the mountain again and this time I have the equipment and have read the book. I start to climb but do not know how to use the equipment, so although I get a few feet up, I cannot go any further because I don’t know how to use the equipment. I can't climb the mountain because I do not know how to, but I have climbed a bit higher than I did before, and that bit of knowledge makes me think that if I had a bit more knowledge I could probably go a bit higher next time. In other words my knowledge is in direct relation to my application of that knowledge, and also in direct relationship to how often I practice the knowledge I have.
Can I climb the mountain? Can you lose 7 stone?
Imagine yourself 30 years from now, looking back over your life and imagine all the challenges you will have overcome if your muscle for accepting challenge is still occasionally flexed? I bet you will wonder what the view would have looked like. I bet you would rather have seen the view weather it took you 1 year or 5 years, it will still be a fantastic view and all the more significant because of the journey, who you will meet, the influences you let in, the knowledge you learn to re educate yourself away from successful fat gain (your established pattern), to successful health (a different pattern).
Belief can exist regardless of positive, negative; hope, non-hope, excitement or disappointment, because it is based on a fact. If people have trodden the path before you then like wise so can you. Belief is just a quiet, inner feeling about our wishes. It survives good days and bad days, it resounds in our hearts as whatever influences we are faced with Belief simply allows you to see that it is only and can ever only be about a journey which is for your lasting health.
