High BMI TV Fodder

Ok, soap box moment coming up, but does anyone else agree that TV shows are still basically making TV Fodder “using” the High BMI person as a tool for increasing viewing figures?

There are various shows which frankly I don’t agree with at all. Professional Personal Trainers shouting at obese clients in a boot camp format is to me poor standards. These trainers no doubt feel they have reached the dizzy heights of fame, yet they may have just sold themselves short, very short.

One is the training spec for obese clients are extremely delicate and I have heard through the grapevine that behind the scenes there were quite a few mishaps and accidents.

Two is it irresponsible to show the obese population workouts such as these as they are not safe or suitable for them to follow?

Thirdly, did any one find it degrading and a tad de humanising?

Fitness Professionals are working hard day and night to reinforce a safe, structured message for High BMI clients. TV Fodder shows do nothing to really help this and if anything exacerbate the profile of the high BMI client, as been “something” to be “whipped” into shape.

I think we need to ask more questions of these types of shows, the stats of injury and distress, the stats of post success following the show and ask the question was it all worth it?

I train High BMI clients and I do not train using methods depicted in these types of shows. The risk of injury, respiratory problems or even heart attacks from pushing this vulnerable group too hard is quite high. If I spoke to any of my clients in that Boot Camp “way” they would tell me quite rightly where to go.

I just watched one of those shows the other week, and the trainer was really shouting at this lady to keep going on the treadmill. Anyway, this woman was exhausted and kept saying she could not do any more, she was then yelled at and told how she was a quitter, that she didn't want this,it was awful. Anyway, she stuck to her guns and stopped, you could see she had reached her limit, and the disapproval and snear from the trainer was just terrible, but I am glad that she stood up for herself. On a different episode I saw a man vomit after a strenuous run and I felt so bad for him,but the trainer said, and I am sure this was to reassure us viewers, that it was just toxins coming out of his body! I couldn't believe it,I am sure this is not the truth. And to pick up on your point as to how the contestants are doing after the show, yes they do an interview 1 month after, but what about 6 months after when there is no prize money up for grabs and there are no bossy trainers about, what about then? Last thing that I wish to say,is that I bought, some time back now,a workout DVD of a UK version of one of these shows, and I tell you something (I watched it the other day),the trainer was so boring and had no interaction with the contestants from the show doing the workout with her,or us that have bought the DVD,and talked more about herself and her reaction,ie,my legs are really burnng now, to the workout she was doing. It's an awful DVD,and to think how much money has been made by selling it. So I seriously believe that these trainers have been put on the show more for their methods rather than their actual knowledge on how to work with the contestants. I shall leave it here! :)

I agree with you wholeheartedly, Lucy. These shows are degrading. They're geared towards making money from their sponsors and nothing else, as all the other reality shows. Haven't seen a good one yet.
