You’ll recall that my bathroom scales just aren’t telling the whole story of my progress but I need to put it on record that my hips definitely are.
It’s not so much that they’re looking slimmer but that I’m able to wear heels again. Now you may be wondering what this has to do with ThinQ Fitness and all will be revealed after a bit of history.
Let me take you back to the 80s when Jane Fonda was queen of aerobics. I was a student living in Paris and joined my first real life aerobics class. All was going well, with twice weekly workouts until, one evening I brought the class to a standstill. The teacher noticed a weird noise and this turned out to be my hip clicking as I exercised. I was banned from the class for my own good until I found out what was wrong.
Twenty something years and many trips to the doctor later, I was still none the wiser but I knew that certain movements were uncomfortable and wearing even the smallest heel meant an aching hip for days. I was cautious about the kind of exercise I could do and in recent years, even walking was painful.
Finally, there was a light bulb moment when a clever physio realised all my hip and back aches are caused by having one leg slightly longer than the other. I was delighted. Wearing a lift in one shoe was a simple solution and I was given the all clear to exercise. I started working with a Pilates teacher to strengthen my hip muscles but was pretty lazy about doing exercises at home.
Then, I joined ThinQ Fitness and the difference is tremendous. All the LBT, toning and Pilates classes have had an effect and I can see that my legs are getting straighter as the hip muscles start to hold the leg in the right position. The hip and back exercise videos by Dom Fisher provide valuable advice and I found them a useful reminder of things my physio showed me. Now that I’ve started step classes, I expect to see even more improvement.
The ultimate test is wearing heels and over the past weeks I’ve been able to go out in smart clothes wearing a little heel - without pain. For me, this is much more important result than weight loss or even inch loss. It makes a difference to how I live my life and how I feel about myself. Dressing up once in a while in smart shoes is good for the confidence – although Sex in the City type stilettos won’t ever find a way into my wardrobe.
Thinking about wardrobes, all this hip work means that a shopping trip is called now that my jeans are getting decidedly baggy.
