The Benefits of Yoga

The body is a truly remarkable creation; it works in so many ways, physically, mentally, spiritually, through breathing, through emotions, through ranges of movements at different speeds and for different endurances.

Yoga to some extent is unique in its ability to create a form of movement and thought which work in harmony with the body and yet still challenge the body. The measured stress on the body helps it to develop strength, stamina, flexibility, yet the absorption of the mind, through breath with movement helps alleviate tensions in the mind and free the mind of “voices” which can be as damaging to health as the stresses of unhealthy food, smoking etc can be to the functioning of the body.

Benefits of Yoga 1:

The postures in Yoga take the joints through ranges of motion which help keep the joints operational at as fuller range of motion as possible. Because the joints are being moved fully they are well lubricated, easing movement in the body. Joints, ligaments and tendons also become more flexible, stronger, longer and less prone to injury.

Benefits of Yoga 2:

Through breathing, position and movement organs of the body such as the glands, organs and endocrine system respond and are stimulated, helping the body to optimise blood supply to various parts of the body and in turn assisting in the body’s ability to rid itself of toxins. It is believed by some that this increase the body’s natural ability to cope with disease and is a preventative way of coping with the “stresses” placed on the body which can lead to disease.

Benefits of Yoga 3:

The Isometric nature of Yoga, where a force is held against another force, means that through the exercises performed the body becomes strong. This means improved muscle definition and control.

Benefits of Yoga 4:

Yoga calms the body through meditation; it is thought that the harmony created through the mind, body and spirit creates more than just a “feel good” factor. It is thought the long lasting effects of regular Yoga enable a person to balance their emotions more effectively, feel calmer, have a more positive out look on life and lots of energy. The slow, gentle movements with deep breathing energize the body rather than tire it. This, in combination with yoga’s relaxation and healing benefits, allows daily renewal and nourishment of the body-mind-spirit.Not surprisingly these factors also make a person less susceptible to illness, aging, lethargy and depression.

Benefits of Yoga 5:

As the body and mind work together in focused concentration to hold poses, breathe through movements and use self control, so the ability of the mind to focus develops. In day-to-day life the harmony taught in class can be a huge benefit to people in “real life” situations as they are all ready so well disciplined in the art of thinking calmly and eliminating stress. Yoga folks generally agree that their focus, attention and concentration are improved by the regular practice of yoga.

Hi Renuka, Thank you for writing in. My advice has to be that you check with your GP first. As frustrating as this may be the specifics of c sections and your overall health post delivery need to be assessed in person. Then, all being well start with a range of beginner classes to improve your health across a range of disciplines. Go well and let me know how you get on. Lucy
