Now there are several reasons to get to grips with your expanding waistline. While a tubby tummy does little for your looks – it will also increase your risk of Alzheimer’s and dying younger.

A new study by US scientists found that people with bigger bellies by the time they reach their 50s are significantly more likely to have smaller brains, leading to a greater chance of developing dementia.

Meanwhile, other health research revealed that even if your overall weight is normal, having a waist size that is 5cms (2ins) more than it should be will raise the chance of premature death by 13-17%. At the extreme, men with waists of 47ins (119cm) are twice as likely to die earlier compared with those with waists under 31.5ins (80cm).

The same shocking statistic applies to women with waists of 39ins (99cm) when compared to those less than 25.5ins (64.7cm).

People with bigger bellies are more likely to be hit by diabetes, heart disease, strokes and cancer.

If anyone with a bulging belly needs the incentive to tackle their weight this is it. It’s your level of activity affects your shape – and the more active you are the leaner you will be all over your body. To trim your tum you need to increase cardiovascular activity, toning and cut the calories.

The Key To A Trimmer Tum Is:

  • A combination of cardiovascular and resistance training to raise metabolism and increase muscle density,

  • Regular toning exercises,

  • A calorie-controlled diet is also vital.

Great Ways To Zap The Ab Fat

Core and cardio combo: Do at least two sessions a week that combine cardio and super core-conditioning moves.

The session: 20 to 30 minutes of exercise that raises your heart rate. For example, brisk walking, jogging, cycling, rowing machine, step aerobics.
