“Did you know the word gullible has been taken out of the dictionary mum?” my 12 year old said innocently one morning.
“Really?” said I, slurping a cup of tea “that cant be right surely?” Then the all-knowing look that I was a fool crossed her face, doh.
So if a 12 year old can catch me out I am clearly easy pray for advertisers and this thought thus passed. Is it that we are gullible or are advertisers just good at playing to our unquestioning side?
I think it’s the latter.
I was fooled because I trusted the set up and the voice and was not expecting anything else. Perhaps in real human terms we don’t expect to be conned by things we think we trust. I can remember being shocked hearing custard powder was cancerous (or something like that) that Pringles contained some awful substance, that Smarties made you hyper for weeks and so on…the shocking bit for me was that I took it quite personally. Companies claiming to sell food had lied to me; everyone knows food is different from poison, so by the time a company has launched a product one is presuming THEY TOO would know if their product was poison.
So, it concludes that they do know it is poison (or a version of) and they sell it anyway because they know we are gullible on exactly this point and they exploit it. To add insult to injury you probably wouldn’t naturally (off your own initiative) have gone into a kitchen/lab and concocted a mixture based loosely around food, added a few chemicals with scary names and then served it to your wide eyed and grateful kids/mother/best mate. So, in short, they have suckered us just as my daughter suckered me.
Easy.
What you are “expecting” is that to save you the time of concocting a veritable treat for your kids/mother/best mate, you could trust this so called “product” resembling food, as a substitute of your labor and trust you wont be harming kids/mother/best mate. But, no, that’s the doh moment!!!
Unwittingly as your child bounces off the walls, your family gets fat and your best mates BP rises along with her cholesterol there is a national recognition that all is not well.
“What can we do”? Everyone cries, eyes wide open…”well”, says the government (in charge of monitoring our health) “Instead of banning crap from being sold in shops which would limit your freedom of choice and cause economic problems, why don’t we keep the problem and tackle it in another way buy selling you a whole load of solutions to solve the problems which shouldn’t really be there in the first place?” “Why yes” we all cry gleefully “ we trust that is defiantly the right solution, now how many chemicals exactly are there in Aspartame?”
FYI:
Aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet) is a chemical combination of two amino acids and methanol; research suggests it may cause cancer or neurological problems such as dizziness or hallucinations.
